Why did your company choose Texas?
SBM Offshore has had an office in Houston for over 20 years, under various company names through mergers and acquisitions. What kind of advice can you give to Dutch entrepreneurs who want to do business in Texas?
In Texas, in person meetings are preferred and because so many companies are located in Houston in the energy sector, it is a very common practice to meet for coffee or lunch to discuss a new project or technology with prospective partners or clients. In Texas, combining a social event with business is quite common and it is very important to be good a master at networking. Getting to know people in your business sector and seeking out social and/or networking events will help to get your boots on the ground. There are multiple industry groups that meet in person or virtually to discuss relevant topics. Also, Texans are also very proud of their heritage and culture, showing respect for their achievements is important. Europeans tend to think their ways is best, be cautious of acting superior as this will most likely not get you very far.
